At Summit Guitar School we take pride in that fact that we love to teach all different genres of music. With so many genres of music out there it seems silly to limit the kinds of music that we teach. The bottom line is that people want to learn the kind of music that they enjoy listening to. Once our students get passed the beginner guitar curriculum we make sure to start honing in on their personal music tastes. This keeps students interested and motivates them to practice. There is a bit of a balancing act that must happen with this method of teaching. Sure, it’s great to let students pick the songs they want to learn, but it’s also important to give them a well rounded musical education. We want to make sure that our students understand how to read rhythms, play scales, and understand basic music theory. It isn’t our goal to only teach songs. It is our goal to help each of our students become the best musicians they can be.
This weeks song lesson by the band Old Dominion is perfect for all of our beginner students. It has basic open chords and a great beginner lead guitar line. In the lesson I break down each of the chord progressions, the strumming pattern, and the song form. I also explain the lead guitar hook and break it down note for note. Please enjoy the lesson and let us know how you like it. Drop a song request in the comments and we will add it to our list.
