I was talking with someone at church last weekend about music lessons. They mentioned to me the fact that there isn’t a great outlet for music students to meet and perform with their peers. Sports seem to dominate youth activities. They spend all this time practicing the sports they enjoy and then they play games. You could say that the games are the performances for athletes. A lot of times music students take weekly lessons with one or two performances a year. Shouldn’t there be more to it than that? I think so… It is true that aside for middle school and high school band situations there really isn’t a great outlet for students to meet and play music. In school you are told what to play. If young musicians do manage to find some friends to start a band with most of the time it is an un-organized mess that ends up going nowhere. We are working to find a way to bridge the gap between lessons and performances. We know that music is not a sport but we can make it just as important if we give students the opportunity to perform more regularly. With more performances students will get used to the nerves that come with the territory. The question is how do we do this… Stay tuned, because that is one of the things we here at Summit Guitar School are working towards… We do not limit our students to playing only specific genres. We encourage creativity, diversity, and the love of music. We as a musical community can make music just as important as sports.
Keep practicing,
Brett Blakemore
